Baby registration of foreigners in the Czech Republic

A baby born in the Czech Republic whose parents are EU citizens should get a Czech temporary residency and the steps are following:

Step 1. Arrange health insurance for a newborn if none of the parents has a permanent residency or EU citizen who is registered with public health insurance. This can be done with a health insurance provider in person.

Step 2. Collect the birth certificate from the local registration office. It must be official and not a photocopy. The birth certificate is applied by the hospital where is the baby born. Also, it should be collected at the same district office depending on the hospital district.

Step 3. Apply for a baby’s passport and provide it to the immigration office before the deadline and get an appointment for the biometric procedure.

Step 4. Skip this if you don’t have permanent residency. With confirmation from the immigration office, register for health insurance, and get a temporary public health insurance card. Once you attach the permanent residency ID of the baby, you will get permanent health insurance.

Step 5. Visit the immigration office at the appointment date arranged through the biometric card.

Step 3. Apply for the Czech family reunification residency at the immigration office. Be sure to ask what is the maximum deadline for attaching your child’s passport. According to law, the deadline can be 180 days.

Step 4. Skip this if you don’t have permanent residency. With confirmation from the immigration office, register for health insurance, and get a temporary public health insurance card. Once you attach the permanent residency ID of the baby, you will get permanent health insurance.

Step 5. Apply for a baby’s passport and provide it to the immigration office before the deadline and get an appointment for the biometric procedure.

Step 6. Visit the immigration office at the appointment date arranged through the biometric card. If both parents have been living in the Czech Republic at least 1 year before the baby was born, they have a chance to get financial support which was 220 000 CZK before January 1, 2019. For parents whose babies were born after January 1, 2019, 300 000 CZK is given.

*from 2.8.2021, the immigration law is changed, and all newborns of Non-EU passport holders can be registered with Czech public health insurance 60 days from the day of the birth. Public health insurance for the period of 60 days. The insurance should be registered under one of the parent’s.

After 60 days period, the parents should arrange commercial insurance for the newborn.

According to Czech immigration law, the newborns of foreigners follow their parents. The baby of a foreigner who is born in The Czech Republic will not get automatically Czech citizenship or permanent residency. A Czech birth certificate is not a newborn's residency permit, it is only proof of birth in the Czech republic. The legal deadline of the NON-EU newborn's residency application is 60 days after the birth. If you miss the deadline, MOI won’t accept the residency application and you should make the application at the embassy in your home country

If you and your partner are expecting a baby but you are not married, you should go through the specific process of registering the father before the baby is born and it should be arranged at the local registration office depending on your district.
