UK citizens who applied for temporary/permanent residences before 31.12.2020 or who obtained temporary/permanent residences will be obliged to exchange these documents for a new biometric residence card. The exchanging period will start from the 2nd of August 2021 and finish on the 2nd of August 2022.
The biometric residence cards contain biometric data - facial image and fingerprints, which are usually collected at the Ministry of Interior of the Czech Republic. The biometric data helps to verify the authenticity of the residence card and confirm the identity of the person who will hold it.
Despite the deadline ending on the 2nd of August 2022, it may still be possible for you to exchange your biometric card with a small fine.
UK citizens’ biometric card will not be equal to a temporary residency certificate and it will be issued for 10 years. Within 10 years UK citizens will either apply for permanent residency or extend it for another 10 years. UK citizens who are protected under the Brexit deal have the same rights as EU citizens and don't need to pass Czech language tests or provide documents related to the source of their income while applying for permanent residency.
The same Rules apply to family members of British citizens who are protected under the Brexit deal, regardless of their nationality.
